Because it matters

The Power of Prayer

I want to talk about the Power of Prayer… Now, what I want to talk about regarding the Power of Prayer is the ACTUAL power of prayer, not the religious beliefs regarding the Power of Prayer. Essentially, a Christian hate group claims that it’s insane campaign against girl scout cookies because of it’s greater campaign against equality and pro-choice organizations is working because of a prayer ring and not because the economy is hard on people. I want to tell you that this is all because of the newfound campaign against the Girl Scouts because they believe in affirming the right to choice and the right to equality that LGBT people (should) have. Here’s what the Family Research Council, a Christian hate group, has to say about the Girl Scouts and recent cookie sales:

The Girl Scouts, whose leadership has been collaborating with Planned Parenthood for years, have found out and their cookie sales are suffering. This is very sensitive for the Scouts. The Scouts had better confess their errors and make a clean break while they can. Yet Planned Parenthood doesn’t let its captives go easily.

May Congress expose and defund Planned Parenthood and may private organizations refuse to submit to shakedowns by Planned Parenthood and others in the abortion advocacy industry. May the Pro-life Majority grow in America until abortion has been abolished (Ex 23:2; Dt 21:1-9; 2 Kg 24:2-4 Pr 20:11; 24:11-12; Mt 27:4-6; Eph 5:11-14).

First of all, what errors do the Girl Scouts have to confess and to whom? Of course, anyone who has been traumatized by the church already knows the answer to this question but let’s continue on… their first sentence “The Girl Scouts, whose leadership has been collaborating with Planned Parenthood for years, have found out and their cookie sales are suffering.” doesn’t make any goddamn sense simply from a grammatical standpoint! Have found out what? And was it the Girl Scouts that has found out? Planned Parenthood? At least if you’re going to start spouting conspiracy theories, make it so I can understand what the hell you are trying to say here! Furthermore, if they have been collaborating with Planned Parenthood for years, why are their cookie sales suffering only now?

“May Congress expose and defund Planned Parenthood”… for what? Planned Parenthood has done nothing wrong, they have simply helping to promote choice and family planning options for women in the US. It’s also interesting how they claim that a victory in women’s rights is an INDUSTRY and not a charity. Like for an example, claiming that suffrage is an industry but hey, it’s easier for them to sell that around considering that health care is an industry in the United States (hey, that’s the problem with capitalism, but I digress..) Furthermore, abortion being abolished would be a crime against the will of the pro-life majority as PRO-CHOICE IS PRO-LIFE.

But here’s what I wanted to talk about, the Power of Prayer. You see, there is an old adage – one hand working does more than a hundred clasped in prayer. The fact of the matter is that even though there are no supernatural benefits to prayer, the thing is that it allows religious bigotry to be mass communicated by religious organizations. It allows people to entangle religious belief with prejudice, to allow them to oppose things that they would not oppose if they actually thought about them in a rational way. And this is an insidious thing about religion – it enables bigotry such as the misogyny inherent in the anti-choice movement and the homophobia inherent in the claims of “protecting marriage” claims (though the fact that they commit legal assaults against marriage is neither here nor there). And this is the power of prayer, in fact – the power of organized religion, the power to destroy a democratic society and work to turn it to a theocratic hellhole.

And that’s a power that needs to be stopped.

Crazy Is As Crazy Does

Sorry I haven’t been posting on here for a while, I guess I haven’t been as inspired as I initially was. But either way, I found an interesting enough topic when I was doing some research on an English Comp paper. The thing is, a lot of anti-abortion protestors apparently believe in a sort of conspiracy theory that Planned Parenthood is actually a for-profit (it’s actually not-for-profit) entity that follows eugenic policies by Margaret Sanger to this day. They claim that the business (it’s actually a charity) of abortion is a form of racial genocide. But you know what else is (not) a eugenic conspiracy? Psychiatry!

Apparently, Psychiatry is a Nazi pseudo-science that has eugenic underpinnings! At least, that’s according to the Citizens Commission of Human Rights, which is a front-group of the Church of Scientology. Since religious groups obviously have the authority to make comments on medical care without scientific proof of such a declaration, I figured this was just as valid. But I wanted to point out this “movement” for one specific reason: the other anti-psychiatry movements want no attachment or affiliation with Scientology or CCHR. However, the anti-choice movement is different in that it is inseparable from religion and lacks valid evidence to support their positions. At least the anti-psychiatry movement makes claims which they back with evidence, both historical and clinical.

You see, psychiatry has been somewhat cruel and a willing participant in abusive government coverups of general fuckups. There have been several controversial experiments done by psychiatrists and some damaging practices (such as electrolysis) and some still continue (such as the subjection of children to seriously awful psychiatric medications). Psychiatry does have it’s uses and I do believe that there needs to be a study of the mind and human behaviour… However, the problem is that I believe that psychiatry is the bastard child of neurology and psychology – taking the medical knowledge and hard scientific basis of neurology while tainting it with the less scientific and more behaviourist specialty psychology. Simply put, they are psychologists with a MD.

But what does this have to do with abortion and the anti-choice movement? Well, the thing is that many of the anti-psychiatry groups have a factual basis to make their claims and do so from a place of genuine concern for others. Whereas, the end phenomena of anti-choice harassers is simply to limit the choices women have in regards to their bodies and to slowly reverse the progress made by women’s rights activists. True, they couch it in the words of concern for the fetus but the fact of the matter is evident in this… they over look the woman in front of them for the fetus that they may/may not be carrying (after all, most of the women that these protesters are shouting at in front of Planned Parenthood are NOT coming in for an abortion and abortions make a very small part of their overall services). American materialism at it’s finest, some people even put non-living sacs of cells over real, living and breathing people!

Don’t Let Bigotry Win, Buy Girl Scout Cookies

Last fall, a Colorado Girl Scout troop admitted a 7-year-old transgender child, Bobby Montoya, after excluding her for some time. In a refreshing turn towards progress, the Girl Scouts of Colorado released a statement welcoming transgender children. I’d call that a major win. Cheers to the young GIRL, and to her family, friends, and other supporters.

Oh, but did the Chicken-Littles of the world ever shit their pants. Three Girl Scout leaders in Louisiana had a hissy fit and disbanded their groups (because they evidently didn’t give a shit about their own scouts,) and even described the inclusion of the transgender child as “almost dangerous,” as ridiculous as that is.

But the bitchfest didn’t end there – Oh, no! One transphobic scout, Taylor, out in California is trying to organize a boycott of Girl Scout cookies because she can’t stand that the girl scouts includes all girls including transgirls. Yes, this transgender child is a girl, despite the body that she was born in. And of course, Taylor, like the other Chicken Littles, also implies that including transgirls is somehow unsafe, yet declines to actually explain how. So much for “girls of good character.”

In some remarkable irony, she cites a publication stating the importance of girls being able to talk to other girls about things they couldn’t talk about to boys, and also the importance of someone being free to be themselves. Somehow, she doesn’t see how these same things apply to the young transgendered child.

I don’t care how old (14, evidently) this little bigot is, Taylor is a nasty bitch. Either her parents have utterly failed to raise her with any common sense or decency, OR her parents actively coach and encourage her intolerance. Either way, this is a mighty disgusting parenting fail.

Fuck this little brat’s cookie boycott. I’ll be buying plenty of extra Girl Scout cookies this year. Cheers to young Bobby Montoya.

Support the Girl Scouts. Support equality. Support Progress. Support LGBT rights. Buy some damned cookies.

ETA: Please check out this awesome plea to not support the cookie boycott made by a transgendered former Girl Scout.
