While you are right in saying the atheists in recent times have become a lot more aggressive and more public in their opposition to religion, it is more of a reaction to religious assault than anything else. I as an atheist, for example have no problem with most of my family being practicing Hindus. Or, for that matter, my friends being Sikhs and Muslims and Christians. For me, one’s belief or lack of it are personal and not a yardstick to measure another human.
In America, where I do not live, so if my reading of the situation is wrong, please enlighten me, I find most atheists railing against religion because Christians have become a lot more vocal and demanding to “Take America back to God”. Their first targets have been atheists and other “immoral” people (gays, lesbians and so on, their views, not mine), so it’s understandable that these communities have stood up to defend themselves. They do cross the line sometimes, maybe more than I get to know halfway across the globe, but that happens.
As for you claim that there is no difference between christianity and atheism is erroneous, since no atheist asks you to accept his claims on faith alone. You, indeed everyone, is free to question atheist principles and delve into the reasoning behind them, sound, scientific, plausible, verifiable evidence is presented, not just wild claims. You might still choose to disbelieve those claims and are free to do so, but at least appreciate that what is offered is a lot more than “Words from High” that religion depends on.

you’re assuming that all religion is oppressive, or that it is an oppression on all believers. and by suppressing religion, you are oppressing the believers of religions. I agree, that Christianity is not the right way, but not because it hasn’t been “proven” by your standards.

You say Atheists do not have a history of oppressing people. But tell me, what is it then, when atheists mock the religious, attack the religions, remove religious icons, prayers, symbols, etc? Is this not oppression, by denying certain people their rights to believe and live as they wish, and to take from them their symbols and culture? And not just to remove and suppress said cultures and ways of life, but to make those whose culture is suppressed and removed bow to your own culture, customs, and symbols?

The Christians did that to my Heathen ancestors, claiming that our ways were not “proven” and that they were “false” while the Christian way was “proven” and “correct.” Now you come to claim that the Christian way is “false” and “unproven” while your ways are “Proven” and “Correct.”

Nay, I am afraid that by any Rational definition, You and your Atheism are just as oppressive as the Christians and other religions you claim are “oppressive.” Your actions certainly speak to such being the case.

Atheism is not oppression, atheism is the absence of oppression by religion. Religious belief has been used to justify oppression for countless years. Furthermore, Christianity is not the right way, as it has never been proven to be true throughout the span of history.

Atheists have not had a history of oppressing people. Atheism does not have a life denying philosophy that says that we’re worthless without god/something else. It’s life affirming in a way that religion can never be.

Ah, but if the Atheist goes around, acting the way the christian does, by what end does the atheist really differ from the christian, except that the god they serve is no god, being that they crush all belief systems other than their own? For does not the Atheist raise theirs to oppress others as well, by saying unto them “there is no god.” This is surely as great an oppression as the christian who says “There is no god but my god.”

The Atheist should stay friends with their Theist friends (if they can) so that they might see the light of Atheism and that Atheists are not evil and that Atheism is the right way. But how is this different from the Christian who stays friends with non-Christians in the effort to show them that Christians are “good people” and that “Christianity” is the right way.

Nay, you can speak of justifications and how your ways are “superior” to the Christian. But all I see are the same deeds done, merely in the name of another ism that thinks itself superior to all others. It is an old story, with a new face, and I fear that you play it no better than they.

The Christians wanders the earth, believing and acting such that everyone must worship their god, because their god is the only one they say exists.

The Atheist wanders the earth, believing and acting such that everyone must worship no god, because they say that there is no god which exists.

The Heathen sits here and wonders why these people can’t live their own lives without the need to insist theirs is the only right way to live and converting everyone to their way of thinking.

Actually, this post was written by Jessica. I wrote the one before it about Girl Scout cookies. Between a new job and starting school, I’m finding it difficult to keep writing. Additionally, while all the anti-choice shenanigans that became startlingly common last year would have provided a lot of blog fodder, I found myself burnt out and I haven’t fully recovered.

I write more frequently to my other blog mostly because it’s more of a diary than anything else. It doesn’t take long to write an article about something I did or thought during a day. Writing well informed articles here, however, requires a lot of time spent doing research.

I would very much like to get back in to posting more frequently. I have many ideas in my head, but not the time and energy to actualize them.
